Transportofdissolvedorganicmatterinrunoffwaterplaysacriticalroleintheincreasedinputsofnutrients(NandP)andmetals(Fe,CuandZn)inwater,andthedepositionofmucksedimentsintheSaintLucieEstuaryandIndianRiverLagoon,Florida.Theobjectivesofthisstudyweretoinvestigatethevariationofdissolvedorganiccarbon(DOC)anddissolvednitrogen(DN)insurfacerunoffwaterwithvaryinglanduses,andtoexploretheirpossiblerelationswiththeleachinglossesofnutrientsNandP,andmetalsFe,Cu,andZnfromdifferentlanduses.Forthis,surfacerunoffwaterfromtwomajoragriculturalproductionsystems(citrusgroveandvegetablefarm)insouthFloridawascollectedweeklyusingpre-installedautosamplersduringJan.2008–Mar.2010.Meanwhile,runoffwaterfromtwelvefieldsiteswithvaryinglanduses(suchasranch,golfcourse,andforest)wascollectedmonthlyusingagrabsamplerfromAug.2008toApril,2010,andsoilswerecollectedatthedepthof0–15cmand15–30cmtwiceayearfromautosampler-installedlocationsandonNov.25th,2008fromgrabsamplinglocationsaswell.Inthefield,watersamplesweremeasuredforelectricalconductivity,dissolvedoxygen,andtemperature;inthelaboratory,watersampleswereanalyzedforpH,totalsolids,turbidity,DOC,DN,totalP(TP),andmetalsCu,FeandZnwithorwithoutpassinga0.45mfiltermembrane.Afterpassinga2mmsieve,freshsoilsampleswereanalyzedformoisture,pH,electricalconductivity,0.5MK2SO4solutionextractableDOC/DN,andMehlich3extractableP,Fe,Cu,andZn.SpatialandtemporalvariationsintheconcentrationsofDOCandDNinrunoffwaterwereobserved,withthegreatestaverageconcentrationsofDOCandDNfromranch(∼28and∼2.3mgL−1)andthelowestfromgolfcourse(∼16mgL−1)forDOCandfromforestandnurseryforDN(∼1.5–1.6mgL−1),respectively.TemporalfluctuationsofDOCandDNinrunoffwaterfromvaryinglanduseswereingoodaccordwithrainfallintensityandfrequencyofrainfall.TemporalvariationsofTPandmetalsFe,Cu,andZnwereinfluencedbyclimaticconditionaswell.CitrusgroveexportedgreateramountsofDOCandDNinrunoffwater(27.6and3.51mgL−1ofmedianvalue)thanvegetablefarms(13.8and2.26mgL−1ofmedianvalue).AnnualcumulativeloadsofDOCandtotalNin2008,2009or2010were>20kgha−1,greaterthanthoseofTP(<13.5kgha−1)andmetalsFe,Cu,andZn(<1.5kgha−1).RanchsoilhadthehighestextractableDOCconcentration(>100mgkg−1),accountingfor1%ofitstotalorganiccarbon.SoilextractableDNhadsignificantcorrelationswithextractablePandCu/Zninsoils.Inconclusion,soiltotalorganiccarbonpoolanditsavailabilityhadanimportanteffectonDOCandDNinrunoffwater.LandusetypeandrainfalleventwerethetwoinfluentialfactorsaffectingconcentrationsofDOCandDN,andtheexportofnutrientsNandP,andmetalsinrunoffwater. |
